IELTS ESSAY: DISCUSS BOTH THE VIEWS AND GIVE YOUR OPINION

Some argue that economic progress and environmental sustainability are mutually exclusive. Discuss both viewpoints and express your opinion.

Introduction( General statement+ Question reference+ Paraphrase+ Thesis Statement)

In recent years, there has been considerable debate regarding whether nations must choose between fostering economic development and ensuring environmental sustainability. While some argue that the two goals are achievable together, others claim that they are mutually exclusive. This essay will examine both views before presenting my own opinion, which supports the idea that economic growth and environmental preservation can go hand in hand.

Body Paragraph 1( Main point 1 +Explanation+ Main point 2 +Explanation+ Example)

On one side of the debate, I agree with those who assert that it is possible for nations to achieve economic success while safeguarding the environment. Governments can allocate funds toward green infrastructure such as electric vehicles, renewable energy sources, and recycling facilities, all of which can help reduce harmful emissions and protect ecosystems for the long term. Consequently, a cleaner environment, with better air quality and well-preserved green spaces, can enhance people's well-being and even encourage eco-tourism, further stimulating economic development. For example, Singapore, despite its substantial investment in sustainable infrastructure—such as efficient public transport and recyclable products—has managed to become one of the world’s top economies.

Body Paragraph 2( Main point 1+ Explanation+ Example+ Main point 2+ Explanation)

On the other hand, critics of this viewpoint argue that balancing economic growth with environmental preservation is inherently contradictory. They suggest that while industrialization can lead to greater economic prosperity and lift millions out of poverty, it often results in significant environmental damage, such as high carbon emissions. A case in point is China, which has built numerous factories and power plants to support its booming economy, successfully improving the living standards of many citizens. However, this rapid industrialization has also caused severe air pollution, leading to deteriorating public health and environmental degradation.

Conclusion( Summary+ Suggestion)  + Opinion

In conclusion, while some believe that the quickest route to economic strength lies in intensive industrialization, I firmly believe that investments in a clean and sustainable environment can foster long-term prosperity while protecting our planet for future generations.
